Deadly Shooting Near Ohio Mosque; Police Rule Out Targeted Attack

(MENAFN) One person was killed Monday in a shooting near a mosque in northeastern Columbus, though police said nothing indicates the house of worship was the target.

Officers rushed to the area near the Alrahma Mosque after reports of gunfire, according to a local broadcaster. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second casualty was found, but the person’s condition was not immediately disclosed.

“This was not an attack on the mosque,” Columbus police Sgt. James Fuqua told reporters. Investigators believe the gunfire grew out of a dispute among several people at a nearby apartment complex, he said.

An event was taking place inside the mosque when the shots rang out, Fuqua said, but police have no reason to believe the site was singled out for violence.

Investigation in early stages

Fuqua stressed that the inquiry has only just begun and that authorities are still working to pin down exactly what happened.

Police have released no information about possible suspects and have not confirmed whether anyone else was hurt.
