V Corps Forward Company conducts a change of responsibility ceremony

POZNAŃ, Poland — Incoming U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Kyle R. Thorpe assumed responsibility as the first sergeant for Forward Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, V Corps during a change of responsibility ceremony at Camp Kościuszko, Poznań, Poland, Oct. 15, 2026.

Thorpe succeeds 1st Sgt. Jeremy C. Brown, who will return to the United States after the conclusion of his tenure as the unit’s top enlisted leader and enlisted advisor.

During the change of responsibility ceremony, the passing of the guidon symbolizing the transfer of responsibility for the Soldiers. The guidon represents the organization’s history and tradition, while the physical transfer of the flag demonstrates the command’s trust in Thorpe to lead and care for the formation.

"As a seasoned infantryman paratrooper, I knew how to preach the gospel of violence, and it has been my honor and privilege to have the opportunity to engage, and I've learned a tremendous amount from each of you, and I thank you all for your mentorship and support to the company,” Brown said. “I'm truly grateful for the opportunity this job has given me to learn.”

Brown assumed responsibility for the company in fall of 2025. During his time in Poland, he helped improve company systems, and readiness, including barracks management, staff-duty rosters, construction projects, command-post exercises, and the company’s first M4 weapons qualification range.

In his farewell remarks, Brown thanked attendees and people who supported him during his time in Poland.

“I want to take this time to thank the Polish people and the Polish Army; this is a remarkable and beautiful country,” Brown said. “I would gladly run through the breach with any of the Polish soldiers I've met during this assignment, and I hope to meet many of you again.”

As Brown’s remarks concluded, Thorpe picks up the torch, and continued Brown’s legacy of leadership and success.

Thorpe has served two tours in Afghanistan, spending five years as a recruiter in Ohio, as a drill sergeant for a year at Fort Benning, and as a first sergeant twice previously. During that time one person stood beside him, his wife who had been there every step of the way.

“I would like to start by thanking my wife. She has been with me through my extremely demanding career,” Thorpe said.

He also added a special thanks to the senior leadership of Camp Kosciuszko.

“I do look forward to the challenge and unique adventures that this assignment will bring,” Thorpe said. “I understand that it is going to be much different than my other companies in a good way.”

Thorpe illustrated that this new task will have its unique opportunities and challenges, and finished his remarks saying, ”That being said, fight, win, look east,. It will be done.”
